Leading multi-disciplinary professional services firm WSP has renewed its contract with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council (including access to Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend Councils), ensuring continued delivery of their major infrastructure projects.
The renewal builds on nearly 20 years of collaboration through the Redstart Commission* and is valid for six years, with the potential for a four-year extension with a value of up to £50m. Through this contract, WSP will deliver essential transport and infrastructure upgrades across the region, supporting economic growth, resilience, and sustainability.
Building on its legacy of successful projects—including the Porthcawl Town Beach coastal improvements, the Church Village bypass, and the Castle Inn Bridge replacement in Treforest—WSP will continue working closely with the Councils to improve highways, flood resilience, active travel routes, and support regeneration schemes, ensuring communities are better connected and protected from severe weather events.
This portfolio will largely support critical highways and transportation projects but could also cover archaeology, architecture, cultural heritage, ecology, and more.
Katherine Bright, Head of Communities at WSP, said: “It is fantastic to be continuing our work with Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, and Bridgend Councils, reinforcing our role as a trusted partner. With a strong track record in delivering transformative infrastructure projects, including major transport schemes, we look forward to continuing to shape the future connectivity and resilience of South Wales. We will continue to collaborate with the Councils, sharing expertise from across our over 480-strong Welsh presence to meet the unique challenges of the region.”
Andrew Stone, Service Director, Highways and Engineering at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: “We have a long, successful and trusted partnership with WSP and it’s great to see this continue.
“As a Council, we have bold ambitions, investing heavily in highways, infrastructure and flood resilience projects, and these are the things that our residents expect us to deliver on.
“We look forward to continuing our partnership with WSP and delivering for our communities in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
”By leveraging our deep understanding of South Wales’ transport network and evolving infrastructure needs, we will help to deliver projects that enhance connectivity, resilience, and economic opportunities.
In doing so, we are well positioned to support projects that align with the Welsh Government’s transport strategy, ensuring that transport improvements and infrastructure upgrades address both current challenges and future opportunities.
*Redstart is a public-private joint venture with Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, and Bridgend Councils and was successfully led for 15 years by the former REI Capita business (acquired by WSP in 2023).
