In 2006, Glencore plc (formerly Xstrata Copper Canada) took over the Gaspe Mine site and began a $116 million site rehabilitation program - this was the first mining operation and copper smelter decommissioning project in Canada. It involved handling over 1,000,000 m3 of materials.
We provided complete engineering, procurement and construction management services on the rehabilitation project and were the main environmental consultants for both the rehabilitation of the mine and the residential properties that were affected in the nearby towns of Gaspe and Murdochville.
The project won the prestigious Schreyer Award, one of the most coveted engineering awards in Canada. "The jury was unanimously impressed by the complexity and ethical awareness demonstrated...We hope that this project sets a benchmark for all future mine decommissioning projects."
