WSP compiled and assessed feasible nature-inclusive design solutions and market-ready products suitable for offshore transmission substations, drawing on scientific research and supplier information. We developed technical specifications for nature-inclusive designs, considering ecological functionality, technical integration methods, cost estimations, and comprehensive risk assessments and created benchmarks using a habitat volume standard of 400m³ to facilitate comparative analysis and practical application of marine habitat structures.
The project provided EirGrid with a structured approach to embed biodiversity considerations into offshore wind infrastructure, offering long-term ecological and regulatory advantages. It enabled informed decision-making by clearly outlining applicable nature-inclusive solutions, associated risks, and implementation guidance. As a result, this could support EirGrid’s positioning as an environmentally responsible operator, potentially enhancing stakeholder relations and alignment with sustainable development objectives.
