Energy and economic modelling enables decision makers to understand how energy systems, economies and climate interact. WSP provides evidence-based modelling and scenario analysis to support policy, strategy and investment decisions, combining scientific rigour, advanced tools and deep sector insight to navigate complexity and uncertainty.

Model based assessment of the energy, economic and climate implications of policy and strategic choices.

Detailed modelling of electricity, transport, buildings, biomass and emissions systems to inform action.

Analysis of market dynamics, infrastructure development and policy interventions to support investment decisions.

Economy wide analysis of energy use, technology change, emissions and economic performance.

Support for organisations developing bespoke energy or economic models, including advisory and quality review.

Design and delivery of applied research programmes in energy and macroeconomic modelling.

Sectoral supply and demand modelling (PRIMES Model)

Large-scale sector applied energy system model providing detailed projections of energy demand, supply, prices and investment into the future. The model covers the entire energy system and the related emissions, making it ideal to simulate long-term energy transformations and clean transition (transport, buildings, biomass, electricity and heat, gas supply)

Macroeconomic multi-sectoral global model (GEM-E3 Model)

The award-winning general equilibrium model for economy, energy and environment (GEM-E3) simulates the interaction between economic activity, energy use, and environmental impacts. GEM-E3 enables policy makers and organisations to simulate emissions reduction policies—such as emission permit trading, revenue recycling, and exemptions—under various policy designs. It explicitly models how prices form through supply-demand interactions, allowing different types of market clearing mechanisms.

Global energy markets model (Prometheus Model)

Prometheus is a powerful global energy model designed to explore how the energy system might evolve in uncertainty conditions. The model simulates the global energy system across 10 world regions and produces yearly projections up to 2070, covering energy demand across sectors and power generation from different technologies.

What decisions can energy and economic modelling support

Modelling supports policy design, energy strategy, infrastructure planning and investment assessment by testing scenarios and trade-offs.

How do you address uncertainty in future energy systems

We use scenario-based and sensitivity analysis to explore a range of possible outcomes under different assumptions.

Do you develop bespoke models for clients?

Yes. We support the development, review and application of bespoke models alongside established frameworks.
