The scope of work included new underpass lighting, widening of the center pier and abutments including related slopewall and grading required for new bridge construction and embankment widening at the ramp reconstructions. The project also included new pavement markings, driveway reconstruction, a 10’ bicycle path along the north side of the roadway, erosion control, landscaping, roadway and tower lighting relocation and traffic signal modifications with interconnect.
WSP was awarded the Illinois Department of Transportation 2019 Award for Exceptional Consulting Services in the Category of the Rural Highway for work on this project. The client recognized the work completed for exceeding expectations for initiative in identifying important issues, developing alternative solutions and resolving conflicting goals. On the recommendation of our team's internal Quality Control/Quality Assurance review, a revised alignment of the frontage road retaining wall was designed. After detailed analysis of guardrail and glare potential to motorists along adjacent Ramp “C”, the height of the wall was safely reduced saving more than $200,000 in project costs.
