What is technical debt, and why does it matter?

Technical debt is the build-up of unresolved issues, incomplete work, or shortcuts taken to meet deadlines. In large projects, these issues quietly accumulate. If left unmanaged, they grow and spread, making future work harder, more expensive, and riskier.

How to manage technical debt in major infrastructure projects

1. Treat technical debt like a credit card balance

Every unresolved issue can add to a project’s “debt”. The longer you wait, the more difficult and more expensive they become to resolve. Expediting rather than deferring will pay back in time and money saved.

2. Spot it - make hidden debt visible

Don’t let technical debt hide in plain sight. Late delivery, non-conformance, open items, unresolved issues/actions, captured unquantified assumptions, and ongoing changes, to name but a few, are all powerful indicators of technical debt. By using live and accessible dashboards that are relatable to all stakeholders, we track these sources continuously and coherently.

3. Manage it - replace firefighting with routine pay down

Schedule regular reviews to resolve technical debt. Make it a habit, not a last-minute scramble. Invest the time necessary to resolve outstanding items before moving forward. Set clear satisfaction criteria so that unresolved issues don’t proliferate the project and become an embedded problem.

4. Stay on track - Measure what matters when it matters

Develop an agreed means of measurement with clear performance indicators. Not all issues will have the same impacts at any given time and therefore need to be quantified with simple metrics such that they provide a timely status.
