Our five-point plan for creating liveable streets

The combination of the pandemic and these themes has made us look at things in different ways and has accelerated the need to address certain challenges. In particular, it has changed what people value and in turn how they are using streets and the public realm.  

This is changing how as professionals we design our streets. We now need to better understand and define what kind of places we want to create, for whom and why. This series explores our five-point plan for creating thriving and liveable streets. 

#1 Inclusive and equitable (3 minutes)

Julian Phatarfod examines why being inclusive and equitable underpins everything needed to build and design liveable places. He outlines three simple stages: why, what and how. 

#2 Healthy and active (3 minutes) 

The design of our streets can lend itself to unhealthy and inactive habits. Daniel Quan explores how this can be addressed through considered design and effective consultation. 

#3 Sociable streets (3 minutes) 

We need more spaces in our towns and cities where people from all ages and backgrounds can socialise. Rebecca Sewell looks at how our streets can provide these spaces.  

#4 Efficient and productive (3 minutes) 

Our economy requires our streets to support the movement of people, goods and services. Suzanna Massingue looks at targeted interventions to ensure this is seamless. 

#5 Adaptive and resilient (3 minutes) 

We are living in a time of significant change with much uncertainty and risk. Matthew Jessop examines why uncertainty presents opportunity for innovation and creativity in our designs.
