Modernising St Mary’s Hospital Infrastructure in Paddington

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is redeveloping its Paddington Basin site, which includes reimagining the 175-year-old St Mary’s Hospital as a modern healthcare and life sciences campus. The future St Mary’s Hospital will be one of the most advanced, research-led, major trauma centres and acute hospitals in the world, bolstering its capabilities across emergency, intensive and trauma care, neurosciences and infectious diseases.

As a major trauma centre for northwest London, St Mary’s is critical to emergency and acute care, but its ageing, fragmented estate is no longer fit for purpose. Its transformation will bring services together, improving patient experiences and clinical outcomes.

The new hospital will provide 800-840 beds and house urgent and emergency care, paediatric and adult services, obstetric and neonatal care, and private patient facilities. Lexica, member of WSP, is supporting this vision through stakeholder engagement, operational modelling, and clinical briefing – helping shape a hospital for future generations.

Planning for complexity

Our experts have supported ICHT’s clinical and facilities strategy since 2015, including the implementation of the Shaping a Healthier Future (SAHF) blueprint for clinical and financial sustainability. Our role spans Trust-wide strategic planning and the redevelopment of St Mary’s Hospital, helping to develop the vision and guiding principles for rebalancing services across the three acute sites, reflecting these in clinical and functional briefs.

We supported the Trust’s Clinical Thinking Group initiative, leading research-based webinars across an array of topics and follow on discussions (e.g. digital, sustainability, robotics and future readiness) with a view to bringing innovation and transformation to the redevelopment programme. This work feeds into visioning and future health service transformation as well as innovative approaches to planning and design.

We worked closely with clinical and non-clinical teams, patient representatives, and the design and redevelopment teams to:

Support design development through each RIBA stage, from our healthcare planning perspective
Continued support in the development and detailing of clinical and operational models that support the Trust’s vision, clinical strategies and transformation plans
Ongoing support toward alignment with the New Hospital Programme ‘Hospital 2.0’ standards, including Schedule of Accommodation (SoA), target operating model and clinical and digital transformation agenda
