Nelson Airport is the sixth-busiest airport in New Zealand, used by around 1.2 million passengers and visitors annually. It provides safe, efficient and innovative services that facilitate aviation growth and the economic prosperity of the Nelson Tasman region. Efficiently operating and growing New Zealand’s busiest regional airport requires a strong focus on a number of key areas, and WSP is a valued partner in ensuring Nelson Airport successfully meets its building compliance requirements. Having safe systems and features is a requirement of the Building Act 2004 and airports are no exception.
Building owners are required by law to undertake annual inspection and certification to ensure all systems in the building are functional and operating effectively. A building warrant of fitness (BWoF) confirms that safety and emergency systems within the building have been inspected and maintained. Failure to comply can result in a $200,000 fine. We manage Nelson Airport’s building and Air New Zealand’s compliance requirements and provides technical expertise and strategic advice to the client for all structural, design and feasibility issues.
OUR APPROACH
We have a long-standing and trusted relationship with Nelson Airport and Air NZ, having provided building compliance services for over two and a half decades. Integral to this is our commitment to excellence, effective communication and applying our extensive global expertise in aviation to deliver the best outcomes. We simplify the complexity of compliance by proactively communicating potential issues and using our technical expertise to suggest viable solutions. Our team is dedicated to an ongoing assessment of our current processes and exploring areas for improvement to ensure we are at the forefront for services and solutions.
OUR SOLUTION
Our team utilises the Building Information Compliance Systems (BICS) programme, our personally developed in-house programme which stores client information on a database that is accessible to the client – improving transparency and ensuring collective vision between both parties. The BICS programme schedules reminders for upcoming BWoFs, fire evacuations and acts as a repository for all building related documentation. Storing client information in one server reduces information sharing problems associated with large companies, improving efficiency in terms of time and energy. Alternatively, this programme also allows the client to put restrictions on access within their own company. The level of access to documentation is tailored according to client want and need.
OUTCOME/CLIENT BENEFITS
We ease the compliance burden and ensures Nelson Airport buildings and structures meet the highest safety standards. This enables Nelson Airport to build on its vision to be the best Regional Airport in New Zealand.
