I found myself drawn to the infrastructure and built environment sector as I knew nothing about it when I joined and really wanted to take the plunge into something completely new. My people focused attitude saw me land in recruitment and the rest, as they say, is history.

My approach to recruitment is all about the person’s skills and experience rather than how they look on paper. I deal with hundreds of roles each year and know the attributes that make a good candidate for any given role. When I sees ex-forces candidates applying for a job, I already know what they’ll bring based on their rank and specialism as well as the knowledge that they too are adaptable by nature; a trait that is critical in our industry.

The main life skill that I can accredit to my time in the Army is that I’ve become a chameleon – a quality that has helped me create my own path as a recruiter.  As a people-focused role, I constantly have to change tact depending on who I’m talking to and bring a human-centric approach to what I do.

Even after the best part of a decade away from the Army, I’m still keen to keep that connection, so led WSP’s submission to become a silver-level signatory of the Armed Services Covenant.
