As an Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) Affiliate Organisation, we translate complex fire‑safety requirements, like those set out by the Building Safety Act 2022, into coordinated, design-led strategies. We consider active, passive and operational measures as one connected ecosystem. This supports holistic decisions, fewer design iterations and confidence in project delivery.

Our services include but are not limited to:

  • — Means of escape and evacuation strategy
  • — Compartmentation and fire spread
  • — Access and facilities for firefighters
Fire strategy consultant

When your design doesn’t fit within the prescriptive limits of conventional fire codes, we apply performance-based engineering to help you demonstrate that the relevant fire safety objectives and regulatory expectations are satisfied. Using robust measures, including computational modelling and quantitative assessments, we give you the evidence you need to justify non-typical layouts or features.

Our services include but are not limited to:

  • — Engineered solutions outside prescriptive guidance
  • — Qualitative Design Reviews (QDR) for complex buildings
Performance-based fire engineering

For buildings with complex geometry or unique fire scenarios, we can use advanced analysis, such as fire and smoke modelling or structural behaviour assessment, to give you a deeper understanding of how your building will perform. These insights will help you better evaluate options, optimise costs, reduce uncertainty and communicate decisions clearly to building regulation authorities.

Our services include but are not limited to:

  • — Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) fire and smoke modelling
  • — Evacuation modelling
  • — Smoke calculations and system performance criteria
Advanced analysis

If you’re considering alternatives to standard fire‑protection approaches, such as unprotected steelwork, our evidence‑led assessments show how your structure performs under realistic fire conditions. This gives you the confidence to make informed decisions and to justify them in your fire strategy, aligning with building regulations and avoiding unnecessary over‑specification.

Our services include but are not limited to:

  • — Rationalisation of fire resistance
  • — Reduction or optimisation of applied fire protection
Structural fire engineering

We engage early with building control and fire authorities to present fire strategy options ahead of formal submission to uncover if further justification is needed. We work with the project team to ensure this feedback is incorporated to support a strong fire strategy submission.

Our services include:

  • — Strategy negotiation
  • — Supporting planning, building control and fire authority approvals
Authority engagement and approvals support

Our sector expertise includes but is not limited to:

  • High rise
  • Complex mixed use residential and Build to Rent developments
  • Transport
  • Sports and major venues
  • Data centres
  • Healthcare
  • Industrial

This cross sector breadth lets us draw insights from one environment to strengthen another, giving clients confidence that even the most demanding projects are delivered with clarity and precision.

Diverse sector experience
We work closely with our clients to engineer beyond the expected, helping them bring safer, more resilient buildings to life, whether it’s a complex residential tower or cutting-edge life science facility. With four centres of excellence across the UK, we’re committed to delivering projects to the highest standards and in alignment with current best practices – helping our clients smoothly navigate evolving planning and building regulations.

Fire engineering blends science, engineering judgement and practical insight to understand how buildings behave in a fire and propose resilient design solutions to protect people, assets and business continuity. It covers everything from preventing ignition to managing smoke, heat and fire spread, and ensuring people have clear, reliable routes to escape.

At WSP, we deliver the full spectrum of fire engineering services, from fire strategy development and performance‑based fire engineering to advanced modelling, structural fire engineering and support through authority engagement. We work across a broad range of sectors, including residential, transport, sports and major venues, data centres, healthcare and industrial projects, helping teams design safer buildings without limiting architectural ambition.

Fire safety influences every aspect of building design, from the positioning of massing to core placement, compartment sizes and atrium geometry. Involving a fire engineer early ensures the right safety measures are integrated from the start, preventing costly redesign and helping the scheme progress smoothly.

The Building Safety Act, introduced in 2022 in response to the Grenfell Tower fire, strengthens how all buildings are designed, built and operated to keep people safe. A key part of the Act is the three‑gateway process for Higher‑Risk Buildings (HRBs), those at least 18 metres or seven storeys tall, or buildings with two or more residential units, care homes and hospitals. The process creates a clear “golden thread” of safety information spanning design, construction and operation.

Fire engineers play a central role in this journey. We help teams design with compliance in mind from day one, shaping layouts, materials and systems so they meet the Act’s requirements and stand up to scrutiny at every gateway.
