The vulnerability of the city to congestion and climate challenges has been highlighted recently by closures of the Auckland Harbour Bridge due to wind-related incidents and the frequency of flooding on State Highway 1. Construction of the new tunnels will also allow for the extension of the existing Northern Busway and provide for active modes from Constellation Drive through to the CBD.
WSP is excited to be progressing the Indicative Business Case for this crucial city-shaping project together with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, in partnership with Ngā Iwi Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland Transport and Auckland Council, and the other Waitematā Harbour Connections participants Beca, SYSTRA, and Cox Architecture.
The Government’s announcement on Sunday marks a pivotal milestone in creating a modern city for Aucklanders, characterised by a transport network that shows resilience in the face of climate challenges, while offering more public transport and active mode choices.
Poised to become one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in New Zealand, the collective endeavour aims to significantly improve the quality of life for Auckland residents and beyond, and will pave the way towards a sustainable and forward-looking urban future.
