Project manager and WSP technical director for asset management Elke Beca says the project team is proud that its Asset Management Multimodal Network Model (AMDS) has been recognised.
AMDS is an open data initiative that digitally maps how New Zealanders can travel — by road, rail, ferry, foot, or bike — now and in the future.
Developed in partnership with all sixty-eight of the country’s road controlling authorities, and transport sector partners, it provides a unified, digital representation of Aotearoa New Zealand’s entire land transport network.
"We’ve developed and rolled this network model out to every single road controlling authority across the motu, achieved this in under two years, and supported the whole transport sector on the journey,” says Elke.
The AMDS network model is transforming transport planning and asset management across the country by enabling better decision-making, promoting collaboration, and supporting long-term resilience in the face of climate challenges. It's a cornerstone of NZTA's digital enablement strategy.
Elke describes the award win as an accomplishment “nothing short of remarkable”.
“This award is fantastic recognition of the mahi and dedication our team has put in and underscores the significant impact we have made in the industry."
Hundreds of thousands of kilometres of roads, paths, tracks, and rail have been mapped in the network model. The model’s 'rolling live' structure means that as new data becomes available, it’s instantly accessible via an open data portal.
Commenting on the project, the Āpōpō judges say the AMDS Multimodal Network Model is a groundbreaking innovation in New Zealand's asset management and transport planning landscape.
"This model is not just a technical achievement; it’s a strategic enabler for smart investment, risk management, service planning, and climate adaptation.
