The site presented several constraints, including the need to retain existing buildings and navigate internal legal boundary lines, both of which triggered fire regulation requirements. Additionally, a Christchurch City Council easement bisecting the site from east to west, along with the limited street frontage and the desire to preserve the main north–south pedestrian concourse adjacent to the playing fields, further shaped the design approach.
The school requested a single building footprint to address the cold wind tunnel effect created by the existing separate administration and library blocks. While a single elongated form could have become a barrier between the north and south sides of the school, the design team turned this constraint into an opportunity.
By offsetting the main entrance from the street, the reception area was sheltered from the prevailing south-westerlies. This also allowed for the creation of a sunny, landscaped forecourt that draws people in towards a double-sided foyer. This foyer connects the public and student realms, serving as an internal hub for showcasing the school’s cultural narrative.
