The Diocesan School for Girls wanted to create a year-round facility that enabled their students to experience a wide variety of water sports. At the compact, inner-city campus they built a state-of-the-art Aquatic Centre that houses a swimming complex with two indoor pools, a classroom, gym, and offices and amenities, across three levels.
This pool complex is the first school swimming facility in New Zealand to feature a pool with a movable floor and incorporates significant environmentally sustainable design features.
Performance and Value
WSP was engaged to provide an integrated service to the project, which included mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, communications, vertical transportation, fire protection and pool water treatment services. These include heat recovery systems, a rainwater storage tank and intelligent ventilation for the pool hall.
WSP’s solution was to create a pool with a movable floor. The main swimming pool can be lowered to a depth of two metres for sports such as water polo and raised for learn-to-swim classes. Additionally, the floor acts as an efficient insulation blanket when the pool is not in use.
Key Achievements
This award-winning facility is energy efficient and minimises waste. The Diocesan Swim School is open to the public.
