The transformation of Middleton Grange School’s library has redefined its role within the campus—elevating it from a dim, underutilised space into a vibrant, light-filled learning hub.
Project Description
The Middleton Grange School Library refurbishment has been transformational, both aesthetically and in terms of improved learning outcomes for students. Guided by the school’s motto, “In thy light we shall see light,” the new library has become a welcoming, calming, and thriving learning hub within the established school campus.
The design response centred on removing both physical and psychological barriers to learning. The large lobby area, previously used for storage, was opened up by removing gates and walls. High-level windows were replaced with full-height glazing on the north-west façade, and perforated aluminium panels were removed to allow natural light to flood the space, dappled by the surrounding trees.
Interior design elements such as timber fins were used to conceal structural bracing while maintaining visual connection from the entry through to the library. A natural palette of light tones, grounded with timber finishes, has completely transformed the space — delivering exactly what the client envisioned. The library is now actively used and enjoyed by students, including seniors, and its flexible layout and furniture have made it a popular venue for school events.
Guided by the school’s motto, “In thy light we shall see light,” the design focused on removing physical and psychological barriers to learning. Key interventions included opening up the former storage lobby, replacing high-level windows with full-height glazing to maximise natural light, and introducing a warm, natural materials palette.
Outcome / Client Benefits
The Middleton Grange School Library is now unrecognisable from its former state. It has become an integral part of student life and a valued asset to the school community. The refurbishment has not only elevated the aesthetic appeal of the space but also significantly enhanced student engagement and learning outcomes, ensuring it will serve the school well for years to come.
Interesting Facts
The concept design was inspired by the school’s motto and the majestic oak trees surrounding the library, visible through its windows. The idea of light filtering through branches to create a
dappled effect on the ground informed the design language. Materiality and colour palette were carefully considered, with colour psychology playing a key role. The palette, a warm, timeless mix of natural timber, soft greens, beige, and white, was chosen to foster a calm and inviting learning environment. Indoor planting further enhances the sense of connection to nature.
Client Brief / Project Challenges
The original library was outdated, dark, and underutilised, particularly by senior students, who found it claustrophobic. Despite previous remodelling efforts, the space remained a
tunnel-like box with minimal natural light. The brief called for a warm, inviting environment conducive to learning and study, with improved circulation and visibility, a dedicated senior study area, and an active teaching space: all unified by a timeless design palette.
