The North Shore Busway in Auckland comprises bus stations linked by a dedicated road for buses only. The stations provide an attractive, easily accessible, safe, high-quality environment to encourage and increase public patronage.
The scope of the project included the design of all the station buildings, platform canopies, platform hard surfaces and landscaping, signage, ITS systems, lifts, stairs and pedestrian overbridges. WSP also undertook civil and alignment works designs for the Busway Southern Sector including circulation space at the stations.
Our team of Architects and Engineers are well versed in the functional design requirements for Public Transport Interchanges. WSP implemented ITS (Intelligent Transport System) solutions, way finding signage, considered CPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) and other functional issues to deliver Bus Stations similar to this project. The design involved the interpretation and implementation of ARTA’s (Auckland Regional Transport Authority) Station Theming Guidelines.
Our landscape architects and stormwater specialists had a primary aim to achieve a bold planting design that would carry a common visual theme throughout the busway, giving each station an individual character related specifically to the local landscape. Grassed swales catch and filter pollutants from stormwater run-off; and trees offer shade and scale to the car park, while keeping views open. Our design lessens environmental impacts and reduces maintenance costs.
Stage II of the project involved detailed construction sequencing and traffic management design for the construction of the pedestrian overbridge from Akoranga Station to AUT across the Motorway as part of the Esmonde Interchange.
