The Waikato Expressway will improve safety and reliability and reduce travel times and congestion on SH1 by delivering a four-lane highway from the Bombay Hills to south of Cambridge.
The Expressway will improve economic growth and productivity for Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty through more efficient movement of people and freight. It will divert through traffic from smaller communities like Huntly, Ngaruawahia and Cambridge, and important cultural and historic sites such as the Taupiri urupa and Rangiriri Pa.
The route will be safer and lead to journey savings of up to 35 minutes, which will benefit locals as well as tourists driving between Auckland and Waitomo, Taupo, Rotorua.
WSP provided engineering and planning advice to Waka Kotahi that resulted in the original designation for the Expressway from Ohinewai to Cambridge.
Our subsequent roles on sections of the Expressway include:

- Rangiriri (4.8km) – principals advisor during construction
- Te Rapa (8km) – alliance partner and design (completed December 2012)
- Hamilton (21.8km) – secondary investigations and principal advisor
- Cambridge and Tamahere (16km) – secondary investigations (completed), principal advisor during construction
- Economic analysis for the entire expressway
