WSP, in collaboration with Downer Group, John Holland and DT Infrastructure (Gamuda) (DTI) is at the forefront of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program, an initiative driven by the Queensland Government to meet the growing demand for rail transport in South East Queensland over the next decade.
The program aims to construct and deliver 65 new six-car passenger trains, setting up a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Torbanlea, located in the Maryborough region. Additionally, a new rail facility will be established in Ormeau, within the Gold Coast region.
This initiative is a pivotal support system for South East Queensland's burgeoning population and economic growth, aligning with major projects including Cross River Rail and the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The construction and ongoing maintenance of the facilities, trains and fleet will not only boost Queensland's job market but also offer substantial training and development opportunities.
The project will involve:
-
Construction of 65 six-car passenger trains.
-
Development of a purpose-built manufacturing facility at Torbanlea in the Maryborough region for major manufacturing and assembly works for the new fleet.
-
Establishment of a new rail facility in Ormeau, south of Brisbane, for train maintenance and stabling.
-
Ongoing operation and maintenance of the fleet and rail facility.
Downer has secured the Design, Build, and Maintain Contract to execute the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program. WSP is now working with Downer's Rail & Transit Systems team, appointed Design and Construct Contractors, John Holland for the Torbanlea Manufacturing Facility, and DTI for the Ormeau Maintenance and Stabling Facility.
WSP is providing services including civil, structural, rail and rail systems, geotechnical, buildings, communications and HV power design for these greenfield facilities. The facilities will meet the manufacturing and maintenance requirements of the new train sets being designed by Downer and their train design and systems supplier, Hyundai Rotem. WSP has commenced detailed designs for the manufacturing, maintenance and stabling facilities with design expected to be complete in 2024.
This project is an exciting opportunity to bring jobs to South East Queensland while building a Future Ready transport system that services the growing population.
