An Icon of Connectivity and Innovation

Constructed from structural steel and reinforced concrete, the Auckland Harbour Bridge is a national landmark, a popular tourist attraction, and a vital transport artery. It connects people, places, and essential services through its engineered corridors.

Spanning 1.2 kilometres across the Waitematā Harbour, the bridge carries water, telecommunications, power, and gas services to the North Shore and beyond. It is a focal point for Aucklanders, with an average of 180,000 vehicle crossings daily—over 64 million annually. During morning peak hours, around 200 buses travel southbound, transporting approximately 9,000 passengers.

World-First Achievements

Road Surfacing Innovation (1995):

In the early 1990s, no proprietary surfacing system met the bridge’s unique requirements. WSP’s specialists collaborated with suppliers to test, modify, and develop a tailored solution. Applied in 1995, Auckland Harbour Bridge became the first in the world to use this material.

Quick-Set Repair Material (2015):
Principal Bridge Engineer David Ashby and the team developed a rapid-setting repair material for surface defects. This innovation saves time, reduces costs, and minimises traffic disruption, delivering long-lasting repairs in a single application.

Coatings Management Plan (Ongoing):
WSP and AHBA partners created a strategy to maintain steel protective coatings by dividing the bridge into zones based on corrosivity and access needs. This approach minimises environmental impact and ensures the most cost-effective, whole-of-life solution.

Behind the Scenes: Maintenance and Management

Few realise the extensive maintenance required to keep the bridge operational. Over 20 Auckland Harbour Bridge Alliance (AHBA) asset management staff work on and around the bridge every day.

WSP partnered with Fulton Hogan and TBS Farnsworth in 1998 to form the Total Bridge Services Joint Venture, and in 2012 became part of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Alliance. Since then, WSP and its predecessors have upheld a tradition of managing major assets while developing innovative tools and solutions for future-ready infrastructure.
