With more than 40 years’ experience in major projects, Jay has been involved in major ports, roads and highways, buildings and tunnels across Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Singapore.
He says, “It’s extremely important to ensure our critical infrastructure is built on solid foundations. Given the variety of what’s below-ground, I enjoy the challenges of improving the ground. Geotech is not a science, but more of an art given the variety and complexities.”
Specialising in soft soil and ground improvements, he has co-authored 50 technical papers on soft clay, reclamation and ground improvement and has presented in conferences in Australia, New Zealand and other international forums.
Speaking on where he sees opportunities for growth, Jay says, “I’ve recently returned from overseas and, looking at the construction scene in Australia, I see a lot of potential to grow the geotechnical engineering capability in helping our clients continue to deliver critical and important infrastructure for our future communities.
“There is a growing need to understand Geotech risks on major infrastructure projects and programs to enable design and construction of stable structures. By expanding our Geotech capability within a multidisciplinary firm will help our clients in minimising risks and provide additional value by expanding on existing infrastructure and market knowledge.”
In 2016, Jay published his first book on geotechnical engineering titled: Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering was published by Springer Publishing Company.
