Upgrading the only underground rail station in the world servicing diesel-powered rolling stock.
Britomart Station is unique as the only underground rail station in the world servicing diesel-powered rolling stock. This meant significant challenges for fire engineering, acoustics and air quality.
The four key parts of the project were:
- The underground station – ‘box’
- The approach tunnel
- The Chief Post Office refurbishment
- Surrounding above ground streetscapes
WSP was responsible for the civil and structural engineering, building services engineering design, and fire engineering in association with Arup. This included mechanical, electrical, plumbing and drainage, data and telecommunications, and vertical transportation services, for all aspects of the project.
The team met the challenges of this significant project by coming up with creative design solutions.
