The historic Newtown Community and Cultural Centre (NCCC) has undergone significant redevelopment and refurbishment to restore the building to its original purpose as the social heart of the Newtown suburb. The project also celebrates the stories and narratives that have been woven into the place since it was first built more than a century ago.
With manaakitanga and whanaungatanga as key design principles, the redevelopment promotes positive relationships through shared experiences and fosters a sense of belonging, respect,
generosity, and care for the people the building serves, along with their whānau and the wider community.
The spaces are already being embraced by the community. They were deliberately designed to support both spontaneous gatherings and quiet moments of reflection. The building functions as
the community’s living room and is furnished accordingly, allowing it to feel like home for those who need it most. Though the project took seven years to realise, the result is a revitalised, century old building ready to serve the vibrant Newtown community for another hundred years.
