The Future of Construction Podcast

Revolutionizing how we build through our kit-of-parts approach

Friday, 24 January 2025
Reading Time : 3 mins

The construction industry stands on the brink of a transformative era. Through innovations, such as Designing for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), offsite manufacturing and advanced digital tools, the industry is reimagining its processes to deliver more sustainable buildings in faster and safer ways.

In this podcast, Indhira Figuereo Blaney, Senior Vice President – Aviation Subsector Leader at WSP in the US, hosts an engaging discussion with Matt Randall, Pre-Construction Director – Infrastructure at Mace Construct, Priya Jain, President for the Americas at Mace Consult, and Dale Sinclair, Head of Digital Innovation at WSP in the UK. They discuss the challenges of sustainability and labour shortages and delve into the potential of industrialized construction and our revolutionary kit-of-parts approach. Additionally, they explain how the current transition will redefine not just how we build, but how we think about construction itself.

23:45
Reflections on the transformative potential of industrialised construction and its impact on the industry’s future.

Key takeaways from the podcast:

  1. Our kit-of-parts approach is transforming traditional construction. This method enhances efficiency, reduces onsite disruptions and simplifies project delivery by leveraging factory environments for manufacturing prior to assembly onsite.

  2. Incorporating industrialized construction helps reduce embodied and operational carbon. Designing standardized sub-assemblies creates longer-term opportunities to disassemble, repurpose and recycle, promoting sustainability across the project lifecycle.

  3. The shift from traditional practices to industrialized construction requires new ways of thinking and working – for example developing new design processes, adapting to digital platforms, and creating new supply chain members. However, the long-term benefits outweigh the initial hurdles.

  4. Success in industrialized construction relies on breaking down silos and changing the relationships between designers, manufacturers, contractors and clients. Strong leadership is required to integrate these stakeholders, promote a shared vision and manage disruptions effectively.

  5. Digital tools, 3D modelling and data-driven decision-making are vital for optimizing construction processes. Innovations like AI and robotics enhance planning, sequencing and execution and pave the way for smarter, more precise construction.

  6. Industrialized construction offers opportunities for job creation and upskilling, particularly in areas of economic deprivation. It also improves working conditions, enabling workers to operate in safer environments with better lighting, dirt and noise control and safer routes around the workplace.

  7. The shift from a project-based mindset to a manufacturing-based approach and a focus on innovation will attract the next generation of talent. Enabling them to focus on the challenges of the future.

  8. Industrialized construction enhances infrastructure resilience by enabling faster, scalable responses to changing demands. Designing with disassembly in mind supports adaptability for future needs.
