The tool, which is aimed at streamlining the planning system for Government agencies, will enable better informed, more consistent and evidence-based decision making. It allows assessment of impacts of different land uses by rationalising methodologies and tools in one place.
Integral for future planning, LandiQ will allow users to identify suitable sites for land evaluation or developments using multi criteria search across the 8 million lots and properties in the state. The tool will also let users create, share and evaluate land use scenarios using a standardised typology approach for rapid assessment of how different land uses perform against each other and impact the surroundings. It will further support agencies to understand state and local context through geocentric analysis and identify opportunities to implement strategic plans.
WSP is delivering the project in partnership with Giraffe, a tech start up focused on the rapid development and analysis of planning solutions, and Aerometrex, a geospatial tech company who we have worked collaboratively with since 2015. This teaming brings together the expertise required to deliver this ground-breaking project for the state of NSW.
Together with our partners, our team has extensive experience in developing user-friendly tools to assist with rapid appraisal and decision making. We are bringing a multidisciplinary and Future ReadyTM approach with an in depth understanding of the complex land use planning framework.
Gustaf Jonsson, Digital Interdisciplinary Lead, says a detailed understanding of complex land use issues are critical to the development and usability of Land iQ.
“Our combined strengths in effective stakeholder engagement, holistic land use planning, applied software engineering and data science are enabling our team to deliver an innovative tool to support enhanced strategic decision making ,”explains Gustaf. “Our partnership with Giraffe and Aerometrex is essential as we develop the NSW Government’s vision of LandiQ to its full potential.
“Innovating beyond the traditional engineering know-how allows us to think beyond the conventional so that we can plan, design and deliver infrastructure that’s ready for today’s conditions and tomorrow’s challenges. The platform is already being used for immediate crises planning to support the expedited delivery of temporary housing in Northern NSW as part of the Governments’ flood response. It also has a great capacity to support future scenarios, by understanding what the world might look like in the next few decades and take action to prepare for it.”
Lucy Booth, Founder and Urban Planner at Giraffe, is excited about the unique opportunity that the project provides to end users with a consistent approach to land use planning.
She says, “The tool aims to provide a rigorous and well-documented foundation for land use planning and decision making, while also providing flexibility for users so that the unique and complex qualities of a project can be captured and tested. The depth of experience in land use planning across our whole project team, including DPE, means that the tool should be well equipped to deal with the wide variety of use cases and users across the NSW Government.”
James Strutt, Director of Property Strategy & Data Analytics in the Property and Development Group at DPE, sees the potential for Land iQ to increase the speed and quality of strategic land use evaluation in a collaborative environment where stakeholders have equal access to rich data and insights.
He says, “Historically it has been challenging to make rapid assessments of optimal land use which consider a range of financial and non-financial outcomes. LandiQ provides user friendly access to GIS capabilities and data driven decision making in an online platform where concepts and plans can be shared and iterated on. Land iQ also provides the opportunity to capture insights for future projects and move away from the more traditional approach of sharing information via email.”
