WSP has been appointed the Owner’s Engineer for the Hazelwood Battery, developed by ENGIE Australia & New Zealand and Macquarie’s Green Investment Group. The 150 MW / 150 MWh grid-scale battery will connect at the site of the former Hazelwood Power Station, providing grid support services and the ability to store and discharge energy to facilitate increased renewable energy capacity in Victoria.
Our team will support the project with technical services to achieve the safety, quality and schedule objectives of this transformational project.
The former Hazelwood Power Station was decommissioned in 2017 but as an established power generation site, connecting the large-scale grid scale battery will revitalise this former power generation site into a long-term sustainable asset.
The battery storage capacity can be scaled up to meet network and market demands serving a critical role in accelerating decarbonisation of the NEM and increased grid resilience.
Cameron Buckley, Director of Energy - Southern Region says, “The Hazelwood Battery will provide important grid support services as well as allow the storage and discharge of energy, to facilitate increased renewable generation in Victoria. The project additionally supports local construction jobs, including WSP’s onsite representative based in the Latrobe Valley.
“Delivering on WSP’s Future Ready™ strategy, we are supporting projects like the Hazelwood Battery to enable accelerated energy transition in the National Energy Market.”
Construction of the Hazelwood Battery is already underway and network connection agreements have been executed, with the battery scheduled to be operational by November 2022 to align with increasing demand in the summer months.
