The Port of Newcastle is partnering with Macquarie Group’s Green Investment Group and the Commonwealth Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to support the development of a hydrogen economy in the NSW Hunter region.
As Technical Advisor, WSP is recommending an optimal site within the Port, delivering a preliminary engineering design and providing environmental planning services to the project. We are drawing on the local expertise in our Newcastle office and leveraging the skills of our broader organisation nationally to provide a full suite of project management, engineering (process, electrical/grid connection, water, maritime/ports, and civil), geotechnical, contaminated land, cost estimating, environmental/planning, and safety and risk services to the project.
The first stage of the Green Hydrogen Hub Project will be underpinned by a 40-megawatt electrolyser with a view to increase that capacity to more than a gigawatt over time and will deliver green hydrogen and green ammonia for domestic and export use. Our client is already forming key partnerships within the Hunter Region representing key industries including agriculture, mobility, export and bunkering, energy generation and transport to support this offtake.
Roger Hayim – Major Project Executive, says “WSP is very excited to be providing our expertise to this technically challenging project. It is well placed being close to renewable energy zones, water infrastructure and within a world class port, which opens the door for further growth and to export Australia’s renewable energy to the world.”
Andrew Ward, Principal Engineer – New Energy says, “As the world’s largest thermal coal shipping terminal, it is fantastic for the Port of Newcastle to be part of a project that begins the diversification between established and new energy. This Green Hydrogen Hub provides a new export industry and supports jobs for the future.”
This is just one of many projects we are embarking on to make Newcastle a Future Ready™ city.
