Partners NRW and Service Stream will design and implement the new Smart Freeway system along Perth’s Mitchell Freeway Southbound.
Alan Rimmer, WSP’s Client Director in WA, said it would have a real positive impact on the community by improving travel times and network resilience.
“The Smart Freeways project will incorporate the latest global technologies designed to monitor and manage congestion and provide the optimum flow opportunities in various traffic conditions,” he said.
“This is the second Smart Freeway project in the state, but it is significantly larger than the previous one, with 20 gantries between on the southbound intersections of Reid Highway and Vincent Street.
“The ITS can monitor traffic conditions, change speed limits, open and close lanes and use ramp signals to make merging easier.”
Construction will start shortly with an estimated completion by late 2023.
The $AUD140 million project is part of the Transforming Perth’s Freeways strategic program which aims to support population and economic growth by improving capacity of Perth’s freeway network.
