WSP Australia is pleased to announce it has entered into an agreement to acquire Calibre Professional Services One Pty Limited, and its subsidiary, Xstract Mining Consultants Pty Ltd (collectively "Calibre”), from Calibre Group Pty Ltd.
Calibre is one of the leading providers of consulting and engineering services across the full asset life cycle, focused on rail, infrastructure, rehabilitation, and renewables projects supporting blue-chip mining clients.
The proposed acquisition is expected to take place against increasing demand for resources essential to the energy transition, and the mining industry’s own need to decarbonise. Australian iron ore is essential to meeting the demand for steel which is predicted to double over the next 30 years compared with the last 30 years, with steel requirements for onshore and offshore wind and solar projects alone likely to increase five-fold.
In addition, mining services capability is required for other minerals and metals essential to transition such as copper, lithium and cobalt.
Calibre has a multi-decade track record of successful projects with blue-chip resources sector clients. Their team of 800 adds significant experience and expertise to WSP, bringing the firm to around 6,000 people across Australia, including approximately 1,300 in Western Australia.
“This transaction will further position WSP to play a leading role in assisting with the green transition of the mining industry in Australia and globally,” said Alexandre L’Heureux, WSP’s President and CEO. “Our combined business will further increase our technical capabilities and provide opportunities to serve as the partner of choice for mining companies with strong ESG commitments.”
Guy Templeton, CEO WSP Asia Pacific said, “The proposed acquisition builds on the expertise and increased capacity the acquisition of Golder Associates brought to WSP. Together with Calibre, our ability to deliver services supporting the accelerating energy transition is vastly enhanced.”
Adrian Chapman, Calibre’s Executive General Manager said, “Joining WSP will create a leading and highly technically capable firm, adding value to major projects beyond mine sites, and enabling us to bring WSP’s key ESG services to a wider client base.”
The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2023, subject to regulatory approvals.
