Only 13% of women in Australia are engineers. As one of those women, it’s a statistic that shocks Zohora and one she is excited to drive change for other young women.
Already a keen mentor to high school students in regional Australia, Zohora has been accepted into Superstars of STEM. The two-year program supports 60 brilliant minds to become highly visible and public role models.
Superstars of STEM is an initiative of Science & Technology Australia, supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. Program Partners include Google Australia and New Zealand, and the Department of Defence.
“When I grew up, I didn’t have female engineers as role models,” Zohora explains.
“My uncle was an electrical engineer and from grade seven, I knew that engineering was it for me.”
Encouraged by her uncle and her father who instilled in her the belief that she could be anything she wanted to be, Zohora is now living her passion.
As an acoustic engineer, Zohora assesses environmental noise. Ultimately, she works to ensure that noise levels are safe and acceptable, protecting people from excessive noise that can negatively impact their health and wellbeing.
Increasing awareness about the role of acoustic engineering drives her.
“Sound and noise management, despite their significant impact on public health and environmental quality, are often overlooked. I want to educate people about the importance of this field and advocate for improved noise regulation and innovative solutions.”
With opportunities to provide expert commentary in high-profile settings, upskill, network and provide students across Australia with a taste of a career in STEM, Zohora is eager to inspire others.
“Increased visibility can help eliminate barriers and stereotypes within the STEM community. I want to inspire more young people, especially women, to pursue careers in STEM fields.
“Superstars of STEM will enable me to share my experiences and successes, and the value of different perspectives in innovation and problem-solving.”
Meet the 2025-26 Superstars of STEM.
