Part of the South West Rail Link, the Glenfield Junction is a rebuild of the station into a modern, safe and accessible facility, supporting an increased capacity of up to 24 trains per hour.
This complex project required innovation in design and construction to deliver a major junction upgrade, in a live rail environment with limited access. It involved a rebuild of the existing Glenfield Station and bus/rail interchange and the construction of two rail flyovers.
Designed and constructed by the Glenfield Junction Alliance (GJA), the project was comprised of Transport for NSW, WSP, Bouygues Travaux Publics and John Holland. The careful use of innovative methods, segregation walls and precast concrete ensured efficient project delivery.
Opened in 2012, Glenfield Junction achieved success with positive safety culture, no environmental impacts during construction, and was internationally recognised for the use of GIS technology as well as on-time and on-budget delivery.
As part of the alliance, WSP also provided Construction Phase Services ensuring that the construction works met the design intent, project specifications, and quality standards so that re-work was avoided and non-conformances were minimised.
Overall, the GJA delivered the design and construction of:
- the northern flyover: a grade-separated junction for the East Hills Line, relieving rail congestion at this critical interchange
- the new Glenfield Station: an additional platform and a new aerial concourse to facilitate interchange between lines and provide better facilities for passengers and staff
- the southern flyover: a grade-separated junction for the new line to Leppington
- an expanded rail corridor: allowing four tracks through Glenfield.
Benefiting the Community
The Glenfield Junction has provided the community with rail infrastructure that responds to increased populations in Sydney’s south-west, including the south west growth centre. It has delivered improved access to public transport for the people of south-west Sydney, providing a link to the major employment centres of Liverpool, Parramatta and the Sydney CBD. It has increased and provided more reliable train services (up to 24 trains an hour through Glenfield) as well as provided a modern, safe and accessible station that helps disabled and less mobile commuters access city-bound rail services for the first time.
