MRT Thomson-East Coast Line

The Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) will be Singapore’s sixth Mass Rapid Transit line that connects the northern and eastern regions of Singapore with the downtown district. The 43km-long, fully underground, medium-capacity MRT line will be one of the world’s longest driverless rapid transit lines. When fully completed, there will be eight interchanges that connect to all the major MRT lines, bringing convenience to about 1 million commuters daily and relieve crowding on the East-West and North-South Lines.

Apart from being the lead electrical and mechanical consultant for more than 10 stations of the TEL, WSP is also the architectural and engineering consultant for the East Coast Integrated Depot. This is the world’s first integrated 4-in-1 depot facility with stacked three-level rail depot, stabling yards, workshops and a multi-level bus depot. With such integration, 44 hectares of land, or an area of approximately 51 football fields will be saved in land-scarce Singapore.

The train depot complex comprises three levels. The Downtown Line (DTL) Depot is located underground, followed by the TEL Depot at-grade, and the East-West Line (EWL) Depot elevated on the level above. The three train depots have been designed to operate independently of one another. The total stabling capacity of the integrated depot is around 220 trains. The bus depot is an independent, three-storey structure located next to the train depots, with workshops on the first level and parking bays for around 500 buses on the second and third levels.

This depot project by the Land Transport Authority was the first to be fully implemented with BIM (REVIT and AECOsim platforms were also used). It was also awarded the Minister’s Value for Money Award in 2014 by the Ministry of Transport.
