The 2020s have emerged as a critical juncture for the global pursuit of decarbonisation, symbolising a concerted effort to combat climate change and transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon future. The ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions has set the stage for transformative changes.
However, the trajectory toward this green future has encountered unexpected challenges and layers of complexity to an already intricate mission.
This article unpacks these complexities and offers a glint of hope for a globally coordinated energy transition.
The realisation of the decade: dealing with disruption
The first notable disruption to the decarbonisation agenda was the unforeseen impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The profound economic and social implications of this event diverted attention and resources away from environmental priorities.
As recovery from the pandemic gathered pace, geopolitical instabilities added further stumbling blocks along the path to decarbonisation. As a result, tensions between major global economies have complicated international cooperation on climate initiatives.
On top of this, ongoing disputes over resources, trade imbalances, and political priorities have delayed unified efforts towards meaningful progress. Furthermore, disruptions to the global supply chain have exposed vulnerabilities in the renewable energy sector and have highlighted the risks associated with a globally interconnected supply chain. All these events have contributed to a complex macroeconomic situation laden with high costs for developing clean energy projects.
Meanwhile, our planet continues to heat up. The alarm bells are ringing, with a recent report from Copernicus suggesting 2023 could have been the warmest year on record following spikes in October norms.
A valuable realisation from the first few years of this decade is that the transition to a decarbonised future is undoubtedly arduous. Despite this, it’s essential to persevere, to be resilient, and to advance the transition with or without disruptions.
In the face of these challenges, the imperative is not only to navigate through the headwinds but also to leverage them as opportunities for progress. By doing that, the global community can not only meet net-zero emissions targets, but also build a more resilient and sustainable foundation for future generations. The lessons learned and the progress made during this pivotal decade can serve as a blueprint and baseline for navigating the complexities of a rapidly changing world while simultaneously mitigating the risks and impacts of climate change.
Unveiling vulnerabilities during and after the storm
The aftermath of the pandemic has undeniably exposed the vulnerabilities inherent in global supply chains. The intricate web of interconnected systems, which once seemed robust, revealed its fragility under the unprecedented strain of a global health crisis. This revelation has, in turn, underscored the critical importance of energy security and led to a need to reassess reliance on traditional energy sources. This has prompted a growing need to diversify and explore alternative, more resilient energy sources. The pursuit of energy security, therefore, goes hand-in-hand with mitigating risks and building flexibility into our energy systems. As the world ventures into an arena of continued geopolitical nuance, these tenets are imperative to maintain new energy uptake.
However, the transition to alternative energy sources is not without its own set of challenges, particularly in the economic context. The costs associated with decarbonisation efforts are magnified in such conditions, posing significant obstacles to progress. The economic uncertainties stemming from the disruptions have raised legitimate questions about the feasibility of sustaining momentum toward cleaner energy, especially as immediate economic priorities may diverge from long-term sustainability goals.
The journey to energy transition progress
There has been progress in this decade. Renewable power projects are exceeding high-carbon technologies when new build projects are considered; governments across the globe have introduced policies and incentive programmes for clean energy investments; almost all major multi-national organisations have ESG strategies and targets; consumers are willing to pay more if it supports moves to save the planet, and innovation is seen as a pre-cursor for how Future Ready businesses operate.
But more needs to be done to bridge the gap from commitment to achievement.
Despite global commitments to decarbonisation, progress has not met initial expectations. This discrepancy is a cause for concern, given the urgency of the climate crisis. The acknowledgement of this gap between aspirations and achievements is crucial as it sets the stage for a more realistic assessment of the situation. The ongoing disruptions are causing roadblocks to carefully laid plans for a sustainable future, highlighting the interconnectedness of global issues.
A particularly concerning trend is the retreat of some companies from clean energy investments. This shift raises questions about the sustainability of the energy transition and underscores the delicate balance between economic interests and environmental responsibility. The fear is that without steadfast corporate commitment, the momentum toward decarbonisation may wane, jeopardising collective efforts to combat climate change.
To move forward, we need to ask ourselves this: How can the 2020s become the Definitive Decade of Decarbonisation? This prompt implies a call to action urging stakeholders to rethink strategies, collaborate on a global scale, and innovate in the face of adversity. The term ‘Definitive Decade’ implies a decisive turning point, emphasising the need for concrete and substantial progress in the race to overcome the climate crisis.
From commitment to action
The enormity of the task of meeting emissions reduction commitments requires a holistic and coordinated effort from all stakeholders involved in developing plans and implementing solutions.
Some of the actions that collectively could be taken are:
Turn the spotlight on all things emissions
When information is asserted and visible, accountability and knowledge are enhanced. Shining a light on emissions can help pinpoint the implications of climate change, communicate the benefits of emission reduction to all stakeholders, define targets, and establish transparent governance frameworks.
Derisk clean energy projects and programmes
Globally governments need to intervene and refine policies, regulations, and funding programmes. This requires more than simply mitigating project risks; it enforces a positive and continuous feedback loop. As communities insist on lowering emissions of affordable energy solutions, governments need to respond with robust policy setting. This, in turn, could make energy projects bankable and attract capital to unlock more innovation and economic solutions that reduce emissions. Industry stakeholders must also play a transformative role. Collaborative partnerships, responsible investments, and a shared commitment are crucial for mitigating the risks.
Multiply the implementation of existing technologies
There are many current and emerging technologies that can help deliver on clean energy expectations. Deep electrification has the potential to decarbonise many applications, including transportation and industrial processes. Meanwhile, energy efficiency programmes and retrofits in buildings are also well-placed for rapid technology deployment.
Scale the development of promising technologies
It is recognised that electrification alone cannot address all the applications involving high-carbon uses. Due to this, many new and not so new technologies are finding commercial applications, such as hydrogen, carbon capture utilisation and sequestration, renewable natural gas, biofuels, short/long duration energy storage, and small modular reactors (SMRs). Hydrogen has enormous potential for hard-to-abate sectors, but very few projects are at the final investment decision (FID) stage. Decisions in an uncertain world need to be made to benefit from this potential in an accelerated manner.
Innovate business models and solutions
There isn’t one pathway to cleaner energy transition. Each country must pursue its own unique path to make informed, long-term decisions but still connect to a united front for rapid transition. Countries must base this on evidence considering the direction of energy markets, technology maturity, and the needs of their citizens. This requires innovative business models and solutions. Innovation in clean energy technologies is perpetually essential. In addition, continued investments in ‘green talent’ are essential to innovate better solutions to decarbonisation and methane management.
Fix the permitting and other barriers to project development
Delays in policy implementation, bureaucratic hurdles, and resistance to change have hindered the swift deployment of sustainable practices. The urgency of the climate crisis necessitates streamlined processes, bold policy decisions, and a commitment to immediate action. One of the key barriers seen currently for established or emerging technologies is the time it takes for permitting and other approvals after FID. The world doesn’t have the luxury of long timelines for project developments. This is an area where governments can step in to reform regulations and remove barriers without compromising on safety, reliability, and affordability.
Gain acceptance through human-centred transition
At the end of it all; transition involves people interacting with people to ensure a cleaner world. With more education, a popularised consensus on new energy model uptake, and more buy-in to proposed solutions, the greater the collective mindset toward decarbonisation efforts.
In essence, the journey towards a ‘Definitive Decade’ of decarbonisation requires a united effort, one where governments, industries, investors, and communities converge to address the omnipresent challenge of climate change.
Transforming headwinds into tailwinds
Current, ongoing, and future disruptions undeniably cast shadows over the ambitious goal of decarbonisation.
However, amidst adversity, valuable lessons have emerged.
For example, when the security of supply was at risk from several recent and ongoing issues, nations made securing energy a priority and accelerated their efforts to find alternate sources. This came in the form of exploring different technologies and reassessing trade corridors or pre-existing bilateral agreements to strengthen new supply channels.
Governments need to prioritise green investments, industry players must align their strategies with sustainability goals, investors should channel funds into environmentally responsible projects, and communities need to take on a more engaging role for a successful and timely energy transition.
The 2020s, despite their challenges, present a pivotal moment to redefine the trajectory of global decarbonisation. Building resilience requires a paradigm shift – adapting to unforeseen circumstances, learning from setbacks, and fortifying systems against future shocks are integral components of a resilient decarbonisation strategy.
If we can collectively embed a ‘Ready. Resilience. Go’ mindset, a more sustainable world for future generations is within reach.
