The Centre for Children's Health Research (Centre) is co-located with the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital, which allows for the faster translation of research findings into better healthcare for young people. The Centre represents the largest single investment in children's health research in Queensland's history.
Five levels of the Centre are dedicated to research space and include wet and dry laboratories. The remaining levels accommodate the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital Pathology service, office areas, retail tenancies and car parking. There is a service tunnel link to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.
Delivering Performance and Value
The Centre is part of a precinct that includes the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital and a Central Energy Facility. The project team had to allow for a fully operational pathology department within the Centre to serve the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital, while the Centre itself was still in construction. To overcome this challenge, we carefully designed the building services for the pathology department with some independence from the building.
Chilled water, heating water, gas, power, communications and security monitoring are provided on a precinct basis, with connections to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital and Central Energy Facility. Our engineering team coordinated these services to ensure consistent standards and performance across the precinct.
Benefitting the Community
Today, the Centre is an integrated hub of specialist knowledge dedicated to improving the health of children. Designed to encourage greater collaboration on research projects, the facility can house more than 400 researchers and allows for future expansion. This flexibility for growth will ensure health research continues well into the future.
