The City of Cockburn partnered with the Fremantle Dockers Football Club and Curtin University to create a new, world-class sporting complex, the largest of its kind in Western Australia. The new complex caters for a full range of aquatic, indoor and outdoor sports and includes pools, water slides, football ground, basketball courts, community meeting areas, a sports shop and education facilities for sports science students. The site is also the training and administrative home of the Fremantle Football Team – the Dockers.
The client's challenge was to create a landmark precinct that offered new, state-of-the-art facilities to the community with minimal environmental impact.
Design and Function
In such a large, mixed-use centre, it is crucial that all mechanical installations operate cost-effectively and efficiently while also maintaining the comfort of the building's users. Our team provided mechanical engineering services, which includes a gas-fired boiler plant, deep aquifer geothermal plant and evaporative cooling system.
We collaborated with all stakeholders in the large design team and with diverse client user groups to achieve the best outcomes for the community and client. This included holding workshops that tackled the design-intensive elements of the building's mechanical services.
Community Outcomes
The sports and education facility now caters for the recreation activities of hundreds of thousands of residents from Perth’s southern metropolitan region. It has set a new benchmark for modern recreation, sporting and education facility development with universal access and environmentally sustainable design features.
