Nyamagasani 1 and Nyamagasani 2 are two hydropower projects that harness the high head potential of the river Nyamagasani in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains in Western Uganda. The rivers are fed by crystal clear meltwaters from the glaciers in the mountain range and provide a fairly constant baseload of water. Frontier Energy is developing both the run-of-river developments, Nyamagasani 1 as a 15 MW plant and Nyamagasani 2 as a 6 MW plant.
Owner’s Engineer
WSP is the Owner’s Engineer on both hydropower projects, acting on behalf of Frontier Investment Management.
Our role includes:
- Review of the EPC contractor’s designs
- Site visits and inspections at critical milestones
- Review of the monthly reports for the lenders
- Certification of the date of Practical Completion under the EPC contract
Increasing Clean, Renewable Energy Generation
The power generated by Nyamagasani 1 and 2 will be purchased by UETCL, Uganda’s electricity generator and distributor under a 20-year power purchasing agreement. Run-of-river is the greenest form of hydropower – essentially, it borrows the water upstream to harness its power and returns the water back to the river downstream of the turbines.
