Queensland needed a new world-standard tennis facility – a new home of tennis. The Queensland Tennis Centre is set on the banks of the Brisbane River at Tennyson. It has 23 International Tennis Federation standard tennis courts including grass, clay and hard court surfaces and a 5,500-seat covered centre court, known as the Pat Rafter Arena. In addition, there are corporate suites, function venues and the public and player facilities required to host a successful international tennis tournament.
Performance and Value
During the design and construction phases of this project, our team provided mechanical, electrical, fire, vertical transportation, and specialist sports lighting design services.
The translucent, glass fibre, lightweight fabric roof acts as a parasol and an umbrella. The fact that it is open at the perimeters of centre court allows for cross ventilation. As well as this, we assisted with comfort modelling of conditions within the seating bowl and centre court, allowing the architects to fine-tune their roof design.
The entire precinct has also been designed with equitable access in mind – for spectators and competitors.
Key Achievements
The Queensland Tennis Centre is the first facility in Queensland to feature all three ‘Grand Slam’ surfaces – grass, clay and acrylic. It hosts the Brisbane International, a major new tournament associated with the Australian Open Grand Slam. Having the ability to host international tournaments, the new centre is also providing a home for elite tennis in Queensland.
