Flexibility is the name of the game for today’s sports and events venues. To generate revenues all year round 365 days a year, they seek to offer a fan experience that is always fresh and unmissable.
But there’s only so much you can do with bricks and mortar. Extending the fan experience into the digital realm means we can create a parallel, integrated digital experience for each event, so the venue can feel customized.
“People who come into the stadium will have a mobile phone and that provides a wealth of attendee information,” says Jaco Cronje, US systems integration lead at WSP. “Anonymized temperature measurements, location-based services, messaging, Wi-Fi, unique identifiers – we can gather that data to develop curated experiences."
Stadiums don’t have to develop digital fan experiences completely from scratch. As truly multipurpose buildings, they can leverage what works in other sectors, Jaco points out.
“If we look at airports or hotels or shopping malls or fast-food outlets, a stadium has aspects in common with all of them. One way to see all the possibilities that they offer is to think of them through a different lens. For example, suites can double as meeting or function venues. Looking at those through a commercial office lens can show us all the different experiences that we could apply in that space.”
