The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre is located next to the Austin Hospital, north east of Melbourne. Is has been flagged as an iconic project in the health sector with its emphasis on the patient experience, wellbeing and the role of family and friends in cancer care.
Austin Health is one of the largest comprehensive cancer care facilities in Australia. It has a well-developed culture of pioneering cancer treatments. The Oliva Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre is a result of identifying the need for combining the previously disparate cancer treatment facilities of 11 buildings spread over two campuses into one purpose-built facility.
Multidisciplinary Services
We provided engineering, building and sustainability services for this project. Our team used environmentally sustainable design principles to deliver improved wellness and indoor environment quality. The design includes chilled technology, no recirculation of air, rainwater collection, solar domestic hot water, and the capacity for cogeneration in a future stage.
In addition to the development of the new facility, the scope of the project included design documentation for the decanting works associated with the relocation of clinical and administration areas from Heidelberg House. We also ensured the building infrastructure services for the Centre aligned with the rest of the Austin Health’s infrastructure plan.
Stage 1 of the development included two radiotherapy bunkers, ambulatory oncology, a health and wellness centre, foyer and reception area as well as a shell area for the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research.
Stage 2A and 2B involved the inpatient wards, including Palliative care ward, High Acuity areas, negative and positive pressure isolation suites.
Stage 2B included a Physical Containment Level 3 (PCA) Laboratory, certified by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator and a Clean Room Suite for the Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research.
Key Outcomes
The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre was the first development in Victoria and largest in Australia to achieve a Green Star Healthcare rating. The Centre offers world-class cancer treatment as a standalone healthcare facility with strong connections to the Austin Hospital.
