Designing more inclusive places
The project will deliver new high-performance training and administration facilities for Basketball Victoria, Basketball Australia, the WNBL Deakin Melbourne Boomers and NBL South East Melbourne Phoenix, along with 12 new indoor courts for local competitions and statewide championships – taking the total number of indoor courts to 18.
Local organisations and clubs will be further supported with new administration facilities to support a broad range of sports, while a new gymnastics centre is being built to reflect the sport’s continued growth in the region.
New food and beverage venues along with a town square will add a communal meeting space for locals and visitors alike, while transport upgrades for the broader precinct will improve accessibility for the Knox Regional Sports Park.
Designing for more inclusive places like this project responds to increasing demand for quality sporting facilities in the Knox area and serves everyone from local players to Australian representative athletes, while transforming the broader precinct into the premier sports park for Melbourne’s South East.
Working with Cox Architecture and Development Victoria, WSP provided core design services including, Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection, Hydraulics, ESD/Sustainability, Waste, Acoustics, AV, ICT, Sports Lighting and Traffic Planning.
Construction began in September-2021 and is anticipated to be completed in late-2023. When complete, the State Basketball Centre will be one of the most significant basketball facilities in the Southern Hemisphere, and a nexus for community sport.
