Geophysical technologies provide new solutions for safer tailings dams

Every dam, whether it’s holding water or mining tailings, can have a long, safe life when designed, constructed and managed to suit site conditions. New geophysical technologies and methods reveal a great deal about the hidden world beneath our feet, informing safer designs.

While poor construction and substandard operations are sometimes responsible for failures of tailings storage facilities, a common factor is a lack of appreciation of site conditions due to poor or inadequate site investigations.
Geophysical testing can explore large footprints at a rapid rate and for relatively low cost, providing continuous ground scans and characterising bulk properties of soil and rock, as opposed to ‘point located’ data from intrusive tests.
