As part of the rollout of metro trains, it converted heavy rail line between Epping and Chatswood to metro standards, providing a stabling facility at Tallawong Road Rouse Hill, as well as 4,000 commuter car parking spaces with bus, taxi, kiss and ride, pedestrian and cycling facilities at all stations.
As Technical Advisor for the project, our team performed due diligence on information related to engineering and infrastructure, used computerised alignment design to verify and optimise the alignment and minimise impact on properties while maximising train speeds, and used GIS tools to investigate hydrology impacts and produce aerial flyovers. With this knowledge, the client had confidence to investigate options and make strategic decisions in liaison with key stakeholders.
Delivering Comprehensive Services
Working closely with the client, our team was responsible for the studies, investigations, designs and documentation required to produce the Feasibility Design Report and Product Definition Report. We provided an integrated service that included:
- Underground works, including tunnels, caverns, cut and cover structures and shafts
- Route alignment and track geometry
- Civil and structures
- Hydrology and drainage
- Geotechnics, hydrogeology and topography
- Assessment of existing infrastructure
- Electrical and mechanical systems
- Vertical transportation
- Buried services and utilities
- Traffic and transport advice to support temporary line closures of Epping to Chatswood Railway for construction
Adding Value
Our team created a virtual railway of the completed metro to provide a detailed analysis of rail operations, exploring aspects such as journey times, timetable analysis and impacts of tunnel, ventilation and associated systems.
Transport Advice and Planning for Network Closures
In collaboration with the Sydney Metro Delivery Office, WSP developed and refined the 7-route bus strategy, now widely recognised as the bright pink Station Link services. The strategy, active during the closure and conversion of the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link, focused on keeping customers moving throughout the region with minimal inconvenience and attain a level of service, comfort and reliability expected in the lead up to a world-class metro system.
The Station Link service and operations are considered a resounding success, with over 3 million users and counting.
Acoustics, Vertical Transportation and Lighting
Our property team was engaged separately during delivery to provide detailed design documentation for the Operations, Trains and Systems (OTS) package. Under the OTS package the Property and Buildings team specified and delivered the MEP, vertical transportation and specialist lighting services for all new and existing stations, services facilities, pedestrian bridges and traction substations for the first stage of the Sydney Metro, as well as sustainability, acoustic and environmental requirements for the Surface and Viaduct Civil Works package.
The project opened in May 2019.
